Abstract

Validating HVAC system performance under real-world conditions is critical to ensure that advanced rooftop heat pump units (HP RTUs) meet design objectives and deliver consistent performance across diverse operating conditions. While laboratory testing provides controlled insights into heating, cooling, and part-load operation, field validation introduces dynamic variables such as occupant behavior, building load, weather fluctuations, and building system interactions. This paper focuses on field validation strategy of next generation RTUs under the Commercial Building HVAC Technology Challenge. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) launched the Commercial Building HVAC Technology Challenge, aimed at accelerating the development and adoption of high-performance RTUs. Following successful laboratory validation of prototype RTUs from eight different manufactures - evaluating heating, cooling, part-load operation, and control functionality - the Challenge advanced to field deployment. This paper details the methodology for field deployment of prototype heat pump RTUs following laboratory validation. The approach includes site selection criteria, installation protocols, and integration strategies to ensure accurate performance measurement under operational conditions. Performance metrics tracked during field testing include energy consumption, thermal comfort delivery, control responsiveness, and backup heat activation. It also discusses how field data complements laboratory results, providing a holistic view of system performance under dynamic, real-world conditions. Initial field results are presented, highlighting system performance under variable loads, and control system reliability. These findings provide critical insights into prototype readiness for commercial adoption and inform refinements to testing protocols and product design. By combining laboratory performance with real-world validation, this effort establishes a robust framework for evaluating high-performance RTUs and supports scalable deployment strategies that advance HVAC technology innovation in the commercial building sector.
