STRIDE: STRuctural Damping Insight for Design Excellence

Research output: NLR › Presentation

Abstract

Presentation to Defense TechConnect Innovation Summit and Expo 2026 titled STRIDE: STRuctural damping Insight for Design Excellence. The event unites the innovation community with the US Department of War for the benefit of national security and societal advancement. The presentation is about a new predictive model for structural damping in lightweight structures recently developed at Imperial College London, UK, and validated at the National Laboratory of the Rockies. Structural damping measures the ability of a structure to absorb energy and damp vibrations. Structural damping governs performance and safety of lightweight structures across energy, aerospace, and defense. The approach relies on a laser-doppler vibrometer to measure damping at the coupon level. These values are then adopted in 2D or 3D finite element models to predict damping at subcomponent or full scale. The approach was validated on a 2.75m long beam. New validation efforts are ongoing.
