Abstract
This project was designed to experimentally validate a prototype integrated cold-start system for alcohol-fueled engines. During the project, the subcontractor designed a simple and compact prototype partial oxidation (POX) reactor and demonstrated its operational performance on liquid E95 at low temperatures. 'Turn-key' operation of the system was successfully demonstrated, along with rapidengine starts and transition to sustained idle at very low temperatures. Based on project results, it appears that continued development of an integrated POX system as a component of the fuel system may offer the best opportunity for improving cold startability and thus acceptability of alcohol fuels.
