Abstract

The matrix isolated infrared spectroscopy of organic radicals was studied by incorporating a pulsed, hyperthermal nozzle with a cryostat. The radicals were produced by pyrolysis in a heated, narrow-bore SiC tube and then expanded into the cryostat vacuum chamber. The combination of high nozzle temperature and near-sonic flow velocities through the length of the 2 cm tube allows a high yield of radicals and low residence time in the nozzle.
