Grid-Forming Inverters: Technology Overview and Case Studies

Research output: NLRPresentation

Abstract

This presentation is intended for power system engineers, operators, and planners who work on power systems that have (or may soon have) high levels of power generation coming from wind turbines, solar farms, and battery energy storage, which are collectively referred to as inverter-based resources. It describes what is meant by grid-forming in the context of power systems, summarizes the state-of-the-art of grid-forming controls, and shows through case studies why grid-forming controls benefit the stability and reliability of power systems with high levels of inverter-based resources. This is intended to help power system engineers, operators, and planners prepare to take advantage of the latest control technologies to secure the reliability of their grids.
