Generic Phasor Model Development for Data Centers

Research output: NLR › Presentation

Abstract

The rapid growth of hyperscale and AI data centers has created a need for dynamic phasor models that accurately represent their interactions with the power grid in large-scale transmission planning studies. This work presents a generic, modular component-level phasor model for centralized UPS-based data centers implemented as a PSS/E User-Defined Model (UDM). The model explicitly captures key UPS operating modes - including double-conversion, battery support, and bypass operation - together with IT load variations and voltage ride-through behavior. By representing mode-dependent responses, the model enables realistic simulation of how data centers respond to grid disturbances and how their operational characteristics influence system dynamics. Validation against electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations demonstrates strong agreement across representative operating scenarios. The proposed model provides a practical and scalable solution for interconnection and planning studies, supporting the assessment of bidirectional interactions between large-scale data centers and the electric power system.
