Abstract

The increasing integration of inverter-based resources (IBRs) and power electronics (PE)-based loads into the grid necessitates the deployment of advanced grid support functionalities within these devices. Volt-var control (VVC), a key grid support function, has been explored to enhance grid capacity, efficiency, and economic value, but VVC from the load side has not been extensively explored. This paper proposes a reactive power support method for end-use loads equipped with unidirectional active power factor correctors (PFCs), such as residential heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and electric vehicle chargers. By permitting limited line current harmonics within the bounds specified by relevant standards, the proposed method enables PE-based loads to provide reactive power support at the grid edge. The feasibility of the proposed method is demonstrated through PLECS-based simulation with a residential window air conditioner load model.
