Steven Spurgeon teaches scientific instruments how to think. His team builds autonomous platforms that couple artificial intelligence (AI) with advanced characterization and materials processing, closing the loop between measurement, reasoning, and synthesis. This work accelerates the discovery and qualification of functional materials for power electronics, microelectronics, and energy technologies. He co-leads autonomous science efforts within the APEX Energy Frontier Research Center, the Transformational AI Models Consortium (ModCon), and a U.S. Department of Energy Basic Energy Sciences program in ternary nitride synthesis. He also leads partnerships with instrument manufacturers to translate AI-guided experimentation into deployable tools.
