In general, Julia Ream enjoys working on multi-scale, multi-physics computational fluid dynamic (CFD) problems across a wide range of applications, from microbes to supercritical fluids. She is currently developing numerical solvers to simulate bioreactors, incorporating data from experiments and metabolic models within an in-house OpenFOAM solver to capture system interactions all the way down to the microbial level. With this project, the goal is to simulate bioreactors of various sizes to better understand the impact of microenvironment formation on microbial performance during bioreactor scale up.
